MLB Takeoff 7/3 Preview: An Ace and...?

Primary Arms

Clayton Kershaw: On tonight's 7-game slate there is one arm that stands clearly above the rest and that's three-time NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw pitching for the Dodgers in the Nation's Capital. In his age 33-season, the left-hander continues to sport a high strikeout rate (30.5%) and isn't walking batters (4.4%) contributing to his continued success on the hill. Kershaw just crossed over the 100 inning mark in his last start now more than half-way through his campaign with a 9-7 record and 3.25 ERA over his 17 starts this season. Although Washington is a top ten offense against LHP (.327 wOBA, 105 wRC+) that doesn't strike out at a high rate (23.3%), this matchup could be upgraded with the Nationals likely without two of their hottest hitters, Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner. Kershaw is far and away the highest-priced arm on both sites tonight ($10K on DK, $11K on FD) coming in at the highest ownership (>50 POWN% on DK, >30% on FD), but in this spot, on this slate, just play him and eat the chalk.

Secondary Arms

Jake Odorizzi: Astros RHP Jake Odorizzi will look to continue his run of good form on the mound as he's once again the recipient of another good matchup tonight. The veteran right-hander is finally locked in and healthy after signing a three-year deal late in the spring. He enters play tonight coming off three straight scoreless outings spanning 14 innings with 18 strikeouts. Odorizzi will face the Cleveland Indians who sport the second-worst wRC+ (88) in the American League against right-handed pitchers this season. Ownership coming in around 30 POWN% on DraftKings and 20% on FanDuel.

Marco Gonzales: Gonzales hasn't pitched in almost two weeks following the birth of his first child and spent most of last week on the paternity list, but was activated and will make a home start
